It was in 1936 that a young businessman named Paul D’Amour, supported by his younger brother Gerald and three sisters Ann Marie, Yvette, and Gertrude purchased the Y Cash Market in the Willimansett portion of Chicopee, Massachusetts, at the A Y-convergence. On the 12th of December, 1936 the siblings launched Y Cash Market, their emblem.
The company is headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts. Big Y presently is controlled by the D’Amour cousins Charles D’Amour and Michael D’Amour.
As of December 20, 2021, Big Y operates 72 stores across Connecticut and Massachusetts. The majority of them are located in the metropolitan regions which include Worcester, Greater Boston, Springfield, and Hartford.
